"NEWS FROM INDIAN COUNTRY" Late December, 2001 Growing Up Indian Here On
Turtle Island In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Plass book is a soothing salve. While obviously not written in response to the attack, Plass poetry could be used as "treatment" toward the healing the nation now needs. Plass, a Menominee and Stockbridge/Munsee, was born in Shawano, Wis. and grew up on the Menominee Indian Reservation. Hes put out a very personal and poignant large collection of poems. Each poem is followed by an explanation of why it was written and where it came from within him. While many authors (and songwriters) like to keep the direct meaning behind the work to themselves and allow the reader to glean what they may, Plass explanations are refreshing. Its like getting a little story along with creative, reflective prose. In his introduction, Plass said he included the narrative, "to give the reader my perspective of my feelings and background." Some of the poems and following narrative are so personal it makes you wince with pain. Plass takes a good, hard look at everything in his life and doesnt seem to take any of it for granted. He writes in, "The Little Guy," about when he was a little boy and it reminds you of how hard it is to be a kid again. All I can keep thinking is, man, this book is raw and good! Its perfect for this time in history. To order his book, please fill out and mail the following order form: "GROWING UP INDIAN HERE ON TURTLE ISLAND"
