Jancita Eagle Deer |
|
For years, mystery has surrounded the rape and ultimate disappearance of Jancita Eagle Deer. The Native community speaks of it whenever Janklow's name comes up, yet somehow, this crime was never allowed to be fully investigated in South Dakota. The tribal court issued a subpoena for his arrest; however, without the cooperation of the States Attorney General, there was no jurisdiction in US courts. At the time of Jancita's rape, Janklow was an attorney for the Rosebud tribe. Five days after her death, Janklow was elected South Dakota's Attorney General. It certainly did not behoove him to investigate himself and the crime has remained an open wound in the hearts of Native people throughout South Dakota. Finally, all of the pertinent documents relating to Jancita's rape have been assembled on a website about Jancita Eagle Deer. There are statements from Jancita immediately following the rape as well as an affidavit by the Tribal Chairman at Fort Thompson Reservation who stopped Janklow while driving drunk and naked. In this document, Janklow announced that no Indian will arrest him. His complete and total disregard for the lives, safety and respect of Native people is a far bigger blemish on the government of this country than Trent Lott's verbal support of racism. While Lott was a vicious supporter of racism, Janklow venomously acted out his hate. An investigation MUST be launched into Janklow's behavior as Attorney General and Governor of South Dakota. This country can not allow the lawless arrogance that Janklow has been allowed to keep behind closed doors in South Dakota. As a national figure, as a congressman making decisions that will effect this entire country, Janklow is a pimple on the behind of this country. And its time to remove him once and for all.
