Fear:
"The
culture of violence in South Dakota's juvenile facilities was not
created by the kids," says Rep. Haley, "but by Bill Janklow."

Bill Janklow:
"Over the years, our Tribes and our Lakota people
have faced many challenges, hurdles and roadblocks on our road to
economic recovery and self-determination. Tragically, many of these
barriers have been laid in our path by the State of South Dakota under
the leadership of Bill Janklow, first as Attorney General and then
as Governor." |

Janklow:
Taxing Questions
"Raising
money for a federal office under anything other than an official campaign
fund registered with the Federal Election Commission is improper,
but Thune's statement would lend support to the argument that the
Governor's Club is a political fund.
If
the Governor's Club is a political fund, the lack of disclosure
of donors is "beyond outrageous," John Dunbar of the Center for
Public Integrity, a nonprofit group based in Washington, D.C., said.
"If
you've got a fund where you can't tell who's giving and what it's
being spent on, you have a tremendous problem," Dunbar said. "Defining
this as a slush fund makes sense."

Governor
Janklow's Response to the Commission on Civil Rights Report
"I
have almost no faith in the governor's ability to deal sincerely
and honestly with problems because of my experience with juvenile
corrections," Democratic state representative Pat Haley said.

Silence
in South Dakota:
A
well-informed citizenry is the bedrock of representative government
and a free society. Without that well-informed citizenry, we have
- South Dakota.
Yes,
that's harsh. But the truth is that here in South Dakota there is
a culture of government secrecy. It is perpetuated by arrogant and
ignorant public officials ... It is enforced by both weak laws that
allow such secrecy and strong laws that actively keep our citizens
in the dark about what government is doing ... Requests for information
were met with delays and outright refusal. Those asking for information
were greeted with suspicion, and in a couple of cases even questioned
by law enforcement ... But the refusals, delays and suspicion are
just too widespread to believe that's all there is to this. From
one end of the state to the other, public officials think it's perfectly
OK to keep public information away from the public. "Open our government"

More
Illegal Tax Moves by Janklow
Janklow
refuses to pay taxes to one SD tribe, even though the state would
be reimbursed, and in the next breath he is demanding taxes from
another tribe that legally doesn't have to pay them.
Janklow
makes his own rules and follows none that have been set forth for
him in Congress. We wonder just what Janklow intends to do if elected
to Congress. Eliminate the reservations once and for all? Many feel
thats exactly what he intends to do.

Jancita
Eagle Deer
For
years, mystery has surrounded the rape and ultimate disappearance
of Jancita Eagle Deer. The Native community speaks of it whenever
Janklow's name comes up, yet somehow, this crime was never allowed
to be fully investigated in South Dakota.
