Iowa Civil Rights Commission, resolution passed |
|
This resolution was passed last week and has just been made available by C. Richard King, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Critical Studies of Culture Program, Drake University. Thanks! The Iowa Civil Rights Commission calls for an end to the use of Native American images, mascots, and team names in Iowa. The Commission believes that the use of Native American nicknames and logos by schools is disrespectful and insensitive to Native Americans and others who object to such stereotyping. The Commission opposes the stereotyping of any racial, ethnic, or religious group, especially when promoted by public educational institutions. In an increasingly diverse state, schools should not perpetuate misrepresentations of any culture or people. The Commission applauds Simpson College, Morningside College, and other Iowa schools that have recently selected new mascots, and urges similar action by schools still using Native American team names and nicknames. |
