Charles moved to South Dakota in 2003 where he was Senior Partner in the Red Cloud Law Firm. Some have asked if he had just used the Red Cloud name, but there were indeed members of the Red Cloud family involved in the firm.

Charles faced innumerably hardships in South Dakota, beginning with an infection in his foot that started shortly after he arrived there. Because of his diabetes, the infection refused, even after a years time, to heal. His foot eventually required many surgeries and forced him to return to Mississippi.

That did not stop Charles determination to set things right in Pine Ridge and South Dakota in general. Corruption both in the state and tribal government were at an all time high, and Charles dedicated much of his time and personal resources to change. His fierce determination to expose corruption led to his banishment from Pine Ridge. See the article entitled Banishment to see how the people of Pine Ridge felt about it.

Once Charles left South Dakota, his articles became even more fierce. Various people fed him documentation that exposed who, what, when and how corruption was draining the finances of the tribe by millions of dollars. And Charles let loose, let it all fly in the Black Hills Peoples News, and the walls came tumbling down.

There are people there today who probably hated him as much as a person could. But for those of us who knew his motivation, his wrath was well aimed and sought nothing but justice. Hopefully, the articles I have provided here will urge people to remember some of the things he spoke of so passionately. There are many articles I am uncomfortable putting on the site, however, if anyone would like to see them, I will be happy to send them. They are really something. And done as only Charles could have done it. The Hawk and the Dove.
